    [유래]

    과메기는 청어나 꽁치를 짚으로 엮어 그늘에서 말렸다가 그대로 술안주나 밥반찬으로 사용하는 지역 특산품이다.

     

    과메기는 저장기술이 발달하지 못했던 옛날, 선원들이 배에서 청어를 말려서 먹기 시작하면서부터 만들어지기

    시작했다는 이야기도 있으나, 과메기의 어원은 관목, 즉'말린청어'에서 비롯되었는데 관목->관매->과메기로

     변천된 것이라는 주장도 있다.

    이규경의 [우주연문장전산고]에 의하면 '청어를 연기에 그을려서 부패를 방지하였는데, 이를 연관목이라....'쓰여

    있고 [규합총서]에는 '비웃(청어)'말린 것을 세상에서 흔히 관목이라 하나, 이는 잘못 부름이요, 정작 관목은 비웃을

    들어 비추어 보아 두 눈이 서로 통하여 말갛게 마주 비치는 것을 말려 쓰며 그 맛이 기이하다'라 하고,
    또 소천소지에는 '동해안의 안 선비가 겨울에 한양으로 과거 보러가기위해 해안가를 걸어가는데,민가는 보이지 않고

     배는 고파서 해변가 언덕 위에 고기가 나뭇가지에 눈이 꿰인 체 말려 있는 것을 보고 배가 고픈 김에 찢어 먹어보니

    너무 맛이 좋아 그 맛을 잊을 수가 없어 과거를 보고 고향으로 내려온 그 선비는 집에서 겨울마다 생선중 청어나

    꽁치 등 눈을 관통할 수 있는 어류를 눈을 꿰어 말려 먹었다'는 기록이 있다.
